Gen Z are revealing their weird secret loves – like Tony the Tiger – in the ‘listen to my cake’ TikTok trend

They are sweet to these guys.

A new TikTok trend involving cake has sparked a flurry of controversial stories online, as smitten ladies plead with their friends and viewers to “listen to me” while atop a cake with their unconventional female faces.

The “hear me” cake trend – also referred to as “broken cake” – has garnered more than 3,300 videos on the platform, featuring cakes featuring some atypically attractive characters, which include fictional cartoons and real-life figures.

The phrase “listen to me,” according to Urban Dictionary, conveys a “completely ridiculous” opinion that often needs to be defended. In this case, TikTokkers are justifying their independent crushes.

Some of the passions include the Kool-Aid man, Tony the Tiger, the man in the Quaker Oats logo, Winnie the Pooh, DJ Pauly D, young Bob Saget, Mr. Clean, Alfredo Linguini from “Ratatouille” and Lightning McQueen from “Cars”.

It’s unclear why Gen Z social media users are using cakes to reveal them, but the trend is an offshoot of the celebrity “squeezed cake” that went viral earlier this year.

“I never miss a video of the cake listening to me,” one fan commented on TikTok, while dozens said they too would make a video of their own.

Another commenter was completely confused by a viral video. “I still don’t understand it … anyone help?”

For the hilarious trend, images of pop culture figures are printed and glued onto wooden sticks which are then stuck to the top of a cake or some type of dessert as participants defend their whimsical wishes.

A trio of friends decorated their cake with the likes of Bill Nye and characters from their favorite childhood cartoons. Despite their more controversial choices – like Dwight Schrute from “The Office” or Mr. Potato Head – TikTok viewers rallied behind them.

“Dwight Schrute makes me feel great,” one person commented.

“OMGG YESSS HANDY MANDY IS A CATCH,” defended another.

“Now I want you to explain why I should listen to you,” said one critic.

The trend has spread to other platforms, such as X, where users are posting pictures of their finished “smash cakes” or sharing who they would top if they participated. One person, for example, posted a photo of the character Beetlejuice, played by Michael Keaton, writing, “sorry to inform you that this is ‘hear me'”.

The humorous trend is a standalone iteration of the celebrity “cushion cake,” which went viral earlier this year and also involved wooden sticks affixed to the faces of famous mushrooms that then became cake toppers.

However, it differed in that the “squeeze cakes” usually featured traditionally attractive celebrities, such as Pedro Pascal, Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan, Barry Keoghan and Ryan Gosling.
